Meet Louise Alexander: A Life Rooted in Faith, Community, and Service

Personal Background and Identity

Louise Alexander was born on April 4, 1960, in Bessemer, Alabama, to her loving parents, Herman and Flossie Alexander. Growing up during the era of the Freedom March, she witnessed history firsthand as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. marched past her childhood home on Ninth Avenue, then a simple dirt road. Her parents’ tireless fight for freedom taught her the values of faith, resilience, and community, showing her at an early age the power of perseverance and service. Raised in the New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Woodson Fallin Sr., Louise learned the importance of respect, love, forgiveness, and turning the other cheek — lessons that continue to guide her today.

Her childhood was filled with cherished memories of attending J.S. Abrams High School, enjoying May Day celebrations at Dunbar Elementary, skating, playing basketball, and plaiting the maypole with friends. Those experiences instilled in her a deep sense of community, and she believes today’s youth deserve the same opportunities to grow, connect, and thrive. Guided by her parents’ principle of trusting God with all her heart and putting Him first in every decision, Louise has carried these values into her roles as a mother, business owner, veteran, and public servant. Even when faced with challenges, including a false indictment in 2010 during her time on the City Council, she stood firm in her faith and integrity and was fully exonerated by a jury. Inspired by trailblazers like Judge U.W. Clemon, the first Black federal judge appointed in Alabama, Louise has drawn strength from examples of perseverance and justice throughout her career. She wants every resident of Bessemer to feel that she is someone they can trust, rely on, and count on to address the issues that matter most.

Professional and Political Experience

Louise’s decades of public service reflect her deep commitment to her community. She served 12 years as City Council representative for District 2 and eight years as State Representative for District 56, securing more than $619,000 in funding for schools across Bessemer, including Bessemer Middle, Bessemer High, Abrams Elementary, and Charles F. Hard Elementary. In addition to her political work, she has been a small-business owner for over 25 years, running Unity Flowers & Gifts, and a proud U.S. Army veteran, demonstrating her dedication to both economic growth and national service.

Louise has partnered with key community organizations, including Concerned Citizens, the Voters League, and neighborhoods such as Oxmoor Valley, Highland, Roosevelt, Broadmore, Jonesboro, and Pipe Shop, knowing that lasting change happens when leaders work hand-in-hand with the people they serve. Her experiences, both personal and professional — including raising a young child as legal guardian — have shaped a leader whose character, compassion, and commitment to Bessemer are undeniable. Throughout her career, she has prioritized honesty, transparency, and listening to the people she represents, always striving to be a true voice for Bessemer, in Montgomery and at home.

City Priorities & Vision for a Stronger Bessemer

A New Direction for Our City’s Future
A Turning Point for Bessemer

Bessemer is at a critical moment. With strong leadership, we can restore pride in our city, rebuild neglected neighborhoods, and create a community where every resident feels safe, supported, and valued.

Making Safety the Foundation of Progress
Safer Communities for Every Family

Public safety is my top priority. Families deserve neighborhoods free from violence and fear. I will strengthen community policing, increase patrol presence, and expand youth programs that keep young people active, protected, and engaged.

Respecting the People Who Serve Our City
Fair Pay for City Employees

Our city employees serve Bessemer every day and deserve fair, competitive wages. I am committed to ensuring they receive proper compensation, respect, and the tools needed to serve effectively.

Restoring Vibrancy, Opportunity, and Community Life
Revitalizing Downtown & Rebuilding Neighborhoods

I envision a vibrant downtown filled with local businesses, entertainment, and community spaces. I want seniors to have welcoming places to gather, children and teens to have safe after-school opportunities, and adults to have access to jobs and resources. My goal is to make Bessemer a city we are proud to call home.

Bringing Resources and Renewal Where It’s Needed Most
Focusing on Neglected Communities

Many neighborhoods — including Old Jonesboro, Northside, Southside, Pipe Shop, and others — have been overlooked for years. These areas face dilapidated homes, neglected properties, flooding, and higher crime. I will direct funding, resources, and stronger police support to these districts to restore safety, pride, and stability.

Building a Stronger Local Economy for All
Creating Jobs & Expanding Opportunities

A strong economy begins with smart investment. By attracting new businesses, offering incentives like tax write-offs, and revitalizing commercial areas, we can create jobs and stimulate growth. I am committed to building a business-friendly environment that supports workers and entrepreneurs alike.

Strengthening Connections Between Residents and Police
Rebuilding Trust in Public Safety

Safe communities require positive relationships with law enforcement. I will ensure officers attend neighborhood meetings, build relationships with residents, and mentor our youth. At the same time, I will support programs that keep teens active through sports, academics, and community involvement.

Empowering the Next Generation to Thrive
Investing in Youth & Education

Children deserve opportunities to succeed. I will partner with the school board to expand tutoring, sports, and after-school activities while reducing financial barriers. More youth centers and safe spaces will help keep our children motivated, supported, and engaged.

Delivering the Basic City Services Every Neighborhood Deserves
Improving Roads, Lighting & Cleanliness

Within my first 100 days, each district will receive its own cleaning crew, grass-cutting team, and garbage crew. This will improve city upkeep while creating jobs. I will also prioritize better lighting, road repairs, and essential drainage improvements.

Leading with Integrity, Openness, and Honesty
A Transparent & Accountable Government

Government belongs to the people. I will ensure full access to public records, honest communication, and clear decision-making. Transparency will be at the heart of my administration.

Immediate Action for Visible Change
My First 100 Days

I am ready to take action. In my first 100 days, I will:

  • Conduct a full forensic audit

  • Meet with all city employees to address pay issues

  • Demolish dangerous, abandoned homes

  • Clean alleys and beautify neighborhoods

  • Ride with police to identify crime hotspots

These steps will set the foundation for honest, community-focused leadership in Bessemer.
